Hero Spotlight: Martian Manhunter

I like Martian Manhunter, but let's be honest, there is never going to be Martian Manhunter animated series, there's never going to be a Martian Manhunter video game and there sure as hell will never be a Martian Manhunter movie. He can't even really carry his own comic book. But he is a very important cornerstone of the DC universe. Or at least he was.

The thing I always found interesting about this character is how very alone he always seemed. Like Superman, he is the last of his kind and Earth is is adoptive home, but Superman was raised on earth. Superman thinks of himself as one of us in at least some sense. Martian Manhunter truly feels alien, no pun intended. So it is only natural he would latch on so strongly to the Justice League when it was founded. It was a chance for a new family. And latch on he did. J'onn J'onzz became in many ways the heart and soul of the League, playing a role in damn near every single incarnation of it. There's a real sense of the character really having nowhere else to go. It's where he can belong.

But now...fuck, now J'onn is no longer a founding or even long standing member of the League. Instead Cyborg has taken his place. Fucking Cyborg. Now I'm not opposed to Cyborg being in the League. One of the cool things about the Justice League to me has always been its long list of former members. It's almost like you don't count as a hero until you've gotten a turn. But a founding member? That's fucking stupid. And yes it was to add 'diversity'. How much will DC sacrifice on that alter? Apparently a shitload.

So what happened to our green friend? What role does he play in the NuDC? He's in Stormwatch. Fucking Stormwatch. You see in this reboot Jim Lee has managed to shove all his Wildstorm dogshit right into the DCU. And in an attempt to I guess legitimize stupid ass Stormwatch we threw J'onn Jonzz in there.

You deserve better J'onn, you deserve better.
