Retro Review: Marvel Mangaverse: Spider-man.

Back in 2002 Marvel introduced us to its "Mangaverse". This was a series of titles and one shots set in an alternate world where Marvel's heroes all have a manga inspired make over. The Avengers all got into giant  Voltron style robots that assembled together, Hulk was a giant Godzilla like monster, and Spider-man was a ninja out to avenge the death of his sensei Uncle Ben at the hands of the evil ninja Venom. He dons the Spider-man outfit to hid his identity, mostly to protect Aunt May.

He catches up with Venom, or rather Venom catches up with him.

He fights his way through Venom's flunkies, then with Venom himself for a while. However while all that is going on the giant Hulk-zilla is tearing through the city. Spidey decides to save the people below who are in danger, among them Mary Jane, rather then continue to fight, allowing Venom to get away.

And that's pretty much it. There was a follow up mini called Legend of the Spider-Clan that is worth checking out as well. This was a pretty damn good read. A lot of the Mangaverse stuff didn't do much for me but I really enjoyed this one. It was a nice little "elseworlds" take on Spidey and stayed true to the theme of responsibility so important to the character. Art wise it's pretty good for manga, my only real complaint is the colors are a little flat and dull. All and all though an enjoyable read. If you haven't read this I recommend it.
