Super fighting robot!

I've been on a bit of a Mega Man kick lately in my gaming, so I thought I would take a look at the Mega Man cartoon from the 90's. I haven't watched the whole series, but I've watched a couple episodes and thought I would share a few thoughts.
One of the design choices I didn't like was making Mega Man, Roll, and Proto Man look like adults. Part of the charm of Mega Man to me as always been that he looked like a kid. That he was Dr. Light's "son". Something about seeking a big huge adult looking Mega Man and a Roll with tits is just off putting to me. I felt like this was some sort of hentai parody of Mega Man that just never got to the sex.
Another odd choice was putting Proto Man strictly in the "bad guy" camp working for Dr. Wily rather than in the "brooding loner/rival hero" roll he is meant to fill. But while he may work for Dr. Wily in this, he is an absolute douchebag to him. Every time things blow up in Wily's face Proto Man is right there to say "nice going Dr. Dipshit". The above screen shot perfectly encapsulates their relationship in this show, Proto Man mouthing off and Dr. Wily silently seething with hatred at him. Proto Man is like a wife from a bad sitcom constantly belittling her poor husband's every attempt to accomplish something.

Also, at the risk of sounding like that scumbag Anita Sarkeesian, the way Roll is portrayed here is patronizing as shit. She tries to help Mega Man in battle and her only weapon is that her hand turns into a fucking vacuum. I get that Dr. Light made her to do household chores, but then keep her in that role, don't send her into battle against killing machines with a fucking Dirt Devil on her hand. If you want her to fight along side her brother Mega Man then give her a real weapon, this is just embarrassing. Seriously Roll, you're just getting in the damn way, go home.
And then there's Mega Man's robot dog Rush, seen here in a rather disturbing pose. Rush talks in this. OK I guess that's fine, he is a robot after all, but he doesn't talk in a normal way. No, that wouldn't be annoying enough. Instead he has to talk like a cartoon dog. And it gets real old real fast. Real fucking fast.

All and all though, these problems I had with it not withstanding, this isn't a bad 90's cartoon. It's easily one of the best video game adaptation cartoons, almost up there with the SATAM Sonic toon. The voice acting (aside from Rush) is solid, the action is fast paced, fun, and well animated, and it even had an episode that thanks to some time travel was guest starring Mega Man X, who was apparently like 8 or 9 feet tall for some reason.
So all and all, despite a few flaws, this is a cute cartoon and you should check it out, most of them are up on Youtube. Because after all, with all the shit going on in the world, sometimes you just need to watch some cartoons.
